Create a targeted media list — Do it yourself or use a paid service like Vocus or Cision. See this post by MediaVantage for tips on building your media list.

Keep records of your contacts with reporters — Nimble or Contactually are good systems for setting reminders to stay in touch with key journalists regularly

Write like a journalist — Check out AP Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style

Track email opens — Use tools like Streak or Mailtrack to see when journalists opened your email

Get alerts when reporters need sources — Sign up for Help A Reporter Out (HARO)

Monitor the news — Track mentions of relevant keywords with Talkwalker Alerts. Also use BuzzSumo to find journalists and other influencers. Twitter lists are also a great resource, and most journalists are on Twitter.

Distribute press releases — Several options for online wire services include PR Newswire and PRWeb. See tips from Erika Gimbel on the main differences between the two services.
